Colour Blindness Ayurvedic Treatment

Introduction:

Colour blindness, also known as colour vision deficiency, is a condition where an individual has difficulty in perceiving or distinguishing colours, particularly blue, green, and red. In rare cases, a person may be unable to see any colours at all. Those affected by this condition also struggle to differentiate between various shades of colours.

Colour blindness was first identified by English chemist John Dalton in 1798, who himself was colour blind. His initial publication on the subject was based on his own experiences with the condition. Due to his contribution, colour blindness is sometimes referred to as Daltonism.

Types of Colour Blindness:

Monochromacy:

This type of colour blindness occurs when two or all three cone pigments (responsible for red, blue, and green vision) are absent or damaged. As a result, both colour and lightness perception are reduced to a single dimension, leading to total colour blindness.

Dichromacy:

In this type, only one of the cone pigments is absent or damaged. This reduces colour vision to two dimensions, causing partial colour blindness.

Causes of Colour Blindness:

The retina of a healthy human eye contains two types of light-sensitive cells: rod cells and cone cells. Rod cells function in low light conditions, while cone cells are responsible for colour vision in normal and bright light. Colour blindness occurs when these cells fail to function properly.

Several factors can contribute to colour vision deficiency, including:

- Damage to the brain, eyes, or nerve cells.

- Genetic disorders.

- Side effects of certain medications.

- Use of tobacco and alcohol.

Symptoms of Colour Blindness:

Common symptoms include:

- Rapid eye movement.

- Sensitivity to bright light.

- Difficulty in perceiving colours and their brightness.

- Challenges in distinguishing between different shades of colours.

Diagnosis of Colour Blindness:

Colour blindness can be diagnosed and measured through specific tests, the most common being the Ishihara Plate Test.

Ishihara Plate Test:

This widely used test is standard in eye clinics and schools for routine colour vision screening. It consists of 38 plates of circles formed by irregularly coloured dots. Patients are asked to identify the numbers embedded within the plates to determine if they have a colour vision deficiency.
